Christophe Barbey is a Swiss lawyer, poet, and peace advocate whose multifaceted career spans legal practice, constitutional reform, and international representation. Holding a Master’s degree in Law from the University of Fribourg (1999) with specialization in international law and criminology, Barbey has dedicated his professional life to preventing conflict and promoting peaceful resolution of disputes. Since 2015, he has served as the main representative of CGNK (Global Non-Enlistment Center) at the United Nations in Geneva, where he advocates for conscientious objection and peace as a human right. Beyond his UN work, Barbey founded and co-coordinates APRED, a participatory institute dedicated to peace progress, and has consulted on constitutional reforms in the Swiss cantons of Vaud (1999-2002) and Geneva (2008-2012), helping embed principles of non-violence and peaceful governance into foundational legal frameworks. His scholarly work includes a longitudinal study of countries without national armies (begun in 1989) and research into peace zones, peace in constitutions, and new forms of democracy. Self-described as both a “smile cultivator” and an Irenist (peace activator), Barbey articulates a philosophy centered on “fundamental human methods”—prevention, non-violence, and universal peaceful solution of controversies—as essential complements to fundamental human rights. Living in the Swiss Alps, Barbey continues to participate in Swiss political campaigns while advancing his conviction that peace is not merely an absence of war but a fundamental human right deserving institutional and cultural protection.
